Dr. House, or Julie's obsession with faintly cruel English Alpha Males
Speaking of TV, I have an enormous crush on Dr. House. He's nasty, he's brilliant, he's complex, he's hilarious, he has a limp, he's right all the time, he has gigantic soulful blue eyes and a wounded soul—it's all just unbearably erotic. A perhaps unfortunate glimpse into my psychology, but there you have it. Knowing that Hugh Laurie (the actor who plays him) is in fact English—not American, like Dr. House—doesn't hurt matters one bit, either. Hugh Laurie actually played one of my favorite characters in the movie version of SENSE AND SENSIBILITY -- the quietly seething, beleaguered, hilarious Mr. Palmer. He has one of my favorite lines: "I never said anything quite so irrational," he mutters, once. He's reading the newspaper "The Porcupine," in the movie, too. Love it.
I also have a thing for Simon Cowell. In fact, my guilty -- and only -- "Reality TV" show pleasure is American Idol. But maybe they should put them all on an island and make them run around and play dangerous games while they sing, this season. Just to keep things fresh. Make all the contestants hunt for their own food AND learn complicated choreography. That'll keep people glued to their sets.
Anyone else have a thing for a very unlikely hero? Or am I only the bent one?

Ooh ooh, I *love* Hugh Laurie!!!! I became a big fan when he played Bertie Wooster in the Jeeves and Wooster shows on PBS. He was so deliciously idiotic. I'll never forget when he sang "Minnie the Moocher" (accompanying himself on piano ... yes, that really is him playing on HOUSE) with the ever proper Jeeves, played by the fabulous Stephen Fry, contributing the hi-dee-hi-dee-hi-dee-ho refrains. LOL!!!
And I think that was SENSE AND SENSIBILITY where he played Mr. Palmer. I think that was the first time I'd seen him play something other than weird comedy. I couldn't believe it was the same actor. And now, here he is playing that erasible, sexy, brooding Dr. House. What a guy!

Oh man!! I never saw Jeeves and Wooster, but I would LOVE to see Hugh Laurie singing "Minnie the Moocher." Although...it might be difficult to reconcile Dr. House with that giddier musical character. Though House, of course, does play broodingly beautiful piano when he's alone. We'd expect nothing less of his character.

Last weekend, I watched SENSE AND SENSIBILITY again. I was amazed at how few lines Hugh Laurie has - but he makes such a huge impact. (Prickly Mr. Palmer reading THE PORCUPINE - very cute, Ms. Austen!!)
I am certain that I saw Wooster and Jeeves on PBS. I have a strong impression of the actor that played Jeeves, but I just can't remember Bertie Wooster. (Was this before the scruffy beard?)
I'm kinda creeped out by Julie's Simon Cowell crush. I know, he's smart, bitchy and British. For my money, he is wonderfully hate-able.
Fess up, Julie: American Idol is NOT your only reality show addiction. Does TOP MODEL ring any bells?

OMG!! I can't believe you outed me re TOP MODEL!! LOL! IT's not an *obsession.* It's more like a...diversion. Yeah, that's it. A diversion. And there aren't any cruel English men featured on it on any sort of regular basis...*general* cruelty, yes...English cruelty, not so much. If they added Hugh Laurie to their panel of judges, my joy would be complete.

Isn't that what friends are for? To keep you honest (and to reveal your secret... uh...diversions.)

Secret diversioN. Singular. Not "diversionS." Ahem. People will think i'm simply RIDDLED with secret diversions, leaving me with no time whatsoever to write. And honest, all of my other diversions are...
Well, *less* secret. LOL. You're a brat, Ken.
